Boston University’s Human Resources Office is visited by virtually all University employees at some time during their tenure with the institution. The University was in the process of hiring a new HR Chief who wanted to introduce a new paradigm for how the department would function. Clear definition of public versus private areas and departmental adjacencies were paramount in planning as well as a comfortable and inviting environment where participants in sensitive and stressful conversations could feel at ease.

Public and private spatial definition was accomplished through the use of card reader access to private areas as well as the separation of these zones by locating a large conference room between them. Guests enter a technology enriched reception area with two self-serve computer kiosks that reduce the quantity of visitors entering nonpublic areas.
