Water Building

Sharon, MA

The Sharon Water Building, built in 1896, is home to the water department offices and two-bay garage for the water building trucks. The office space was comprised of four small rooms and a bathroom which were inefficient and poorly laid out. The task for KSID was to provide an office area which includes the town’s water monitoring and analyzing system (SCADA), meeting area with kitchenette, upgraded bathroom and locker area with boot warmers and work area. The Town wanted to modernize the space while paying tribute to the unique details of the historic building, which include glass doors with an arched window that spans almost 18 feet.

The arched window was partially covered by a drop ceiling and years of paint. Some of the glass was removed from the window to run wiring from the office to the garage portion of the building. The challenge was to celebrate all 18 feet of the window in a way that didn’t make the office and meeting space feel like a cavern. KSID achieved this by creating a barrel drywall ceiling that follows the curve of the arch and incorporates period-appropriate pendants.
